Skin is the working surface of this massage. When a patch of it is not ready, the plan has to bend around it.
A body to body massage with a fresh tattoo or sunburn is not automatically off the table, but it is not a booking to make without thinking either. Warm oil, long gliding friction and the weight of another body all land on the skin before they land anywhere else. Most of the time that is the pleasure of it. On skin that is raw, peeling or newly inked, it is the problem.
Here is how to judge each situation, and what the therapist can do about it.
A fresh tattoo
This one is simple, because your tattoo artist has already answered it. Aftercare instructions almost always say the same things for the first weeks: keep the piece out of baths and pools, away from friction, and free of anything other than the product they recommended. A full-contact session breaks all three at once. Oil works into the ink, a forearm slides across it, and weight presses down onto skin that is still settling.
So the guidance is to wait until the artist would call it finished, the flaking over and the surface smooth. For a small piece that can be a couple of weeks; a large back piece takes longer. If you are unsure, ask the artist rather than us.
What if the booking cannot wait? It depends on where the tattoo sits. A new piece on a forearm or a calf can be covered and simply left out of the route. A fresh piece across the back or the ribs lies exactly where the broad contact happens, and leaving it out means leaving out most of the massage. In that case, choose a different evening.
Body to body massage with a fresh tattoo or sunburn: the sunburn half
Amsterdam catches visitors out in summer. A long afternoon on an open boat or a terrace, the wind off the water masking the heat, and the shoulders are red by dinner.
Mild pinkness that does not hurt to touch is usually fine for a session at a lighter weight, and warm oil can even feel good on it. Anything that stings when a shirt brushes it is not fine. Broad weight across burnt shoulders turns the best part of the hour into the worst, and the heat of skin contact makes a burn feel hotter still.
If the burn is limited to one area, there are two practical options. Keep the room cooler than usual and ask for that region to be crossed lightly or skipped. Or shift the balance of the session towards the parts that escaped: a burnt back above untouched legs can still make for a very good ninety minutes, and moving the time between regions is an ordinary request.
If the burn is widespread, wait a couple of days. Nothing about full contact improves on skin that hurts.
The smaller cases
A new piercing. Navel, nipple, or anything else the torso will pass over: mention it, because broad contact catches jewellery and presses on it. Ear and nose piercings are rarely an issue beyond turning the head the other way.
Fresh waxing or epilation. Much like shaving, except that the sting under oil can last longer. A day's gap is kinder than an hour's.
Self-tan. Less a skin problem than a transfer problem. Fresh tan lifts under warm oil, streaks where the glide is heaviest, and leaves its colour on the towels and on the therapist. Apply it after the booking rather than before, or give it a full day and a shower first.
Grazes and bruises. Cycling in this city produces both. Small grazes can be covered and avoided. Bruises are fine to work near and not fine to work on, since weight on a bruise is exactly as pleasant as it sounds; does body to body massage hurt covers the other places where broad pressure can turn sharp.
Insect bites. Summer evenings by the canals deliver plenty. Oil can make them itch more, so point them out and they will be crossed quickly.
What about gel?
Nuru gel stays on the surface rather than soaking in, and needs a shower afterwards, which leads some people to assume it is gentler on sensitive patches. In practice the unbroken glide and the rinse ask more of a sore area, not less. The same waiting rules apply to gel and to foam.
How to tell the therapist
In the booking message, one line: what it is, where it is, and how recent. Fresh tattoo on the left shoulder, ten days old. Sunburn across the upper back, stings to the touch. That lets her judge before she sets off whether the session will work as planned, or whether a different day would give you a better one.
At the door, point to it as well. Therapists would far rather know in advance than discover it halfway through a pass. The preparation guide runs through the rest of the skin checklist, from lotion to fragrance.
When moving the booking is the better choice
A session that works around a large sore area is still a session, but it is a thinner version of what full contact can be. If the skin will be ready in a few days and you are in town that long, a later evening is usually the better decision. The rate is the same EUR 180 an hour whenever it lands, every therapist works around the clock, and an hour on skin that is ready for it is worth the short wait.
