Layer one: hands you already understand
Anyone who has had a conventional massage will recognise the opening. You lie face down with a towel wherever you want one. Warm oil goes into her hands rather than straight onto your skin, and the first strokes are palms and fingers moving up the back and out across the shoulders. This part is no formality. It warms the skin, spreads the oil evenly, and tells the therapist where you hold tension and how you respond to pressure. For a beginner it does something more: it lets you settle into a position and a room that feel ordinary before anything unfamiliar happens. If you would like this stage to last longer, say so. There is no fixed moment when it has to end, and a slower start costs nothing at all.
